The lethal house lure

40 villages, central Côte d'Ivoire

Window screening and EaveTubes turn the house into a lure and kill device. Mosquitoes drawn to the eaves by the smell of sleepers meet an insecticide instead of a way in. The approach was tested in a two-arm cluster randomised trial, with new treated nets in every household.

Malaria in children fell from 2.29 to 1.43 cases per child per year (hazard ratio 0.62)

EaveTubes on their own

Côte d'Ivoire

After the lure combining screening and EaveTubes, this cluster randomised trial asks whether EaveTubes alone, an inexpensive tool fitted into the walls under World Health Organization evaluation, reduce malaria in the villages where houses are equipped.

Results not yet published.

Nets that kill resistant mosquitoes

Benin, Côte d'Ivoire and Tanzania

Chlorfenapyr kills mosquitoes by disrupting their energy production, so pyrethroid resistance does not protect them. From adapted laboratory tests to hut trials and a three-arm cluster randomised trial in Côte d'Ivoire, these studies follow the new generation of nets.

In Benin, Interceptor G2 killed 71% of resistant mosquitoes against 20% for a standard net, and still 65% after 20 washes

Attractive targeted sugar baits

M'bé field station, central Côte d'Ivoire

Mosquitoes also feed on sugar. Baits laced with an insecticide reach them by mouth, a route that can carry compounds new to malaria control, alongside the nets families already use.

Adding chlorfenapyr baits to treated nets raised the mortality of resistant mosquitoes from 19% to 39%

Resistance in Benin

Ladji and Malanville, Benin

In experimental huts at two sites, one where the kdr resistance gene was common and one where mosquitoes were still susceptible, he measured how well treated nets and spraying still worked.

Treated nets killed 98% of susceptible mosquitoes at Malanville but only 30% at Ladji, where kdr was common
